The Tarantino Factor

Yesterday morning is a good one, like no other. The main reason? Christoph Waltz won his ultimate prize of the lot, the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

It is satisfying to watch him be the golden statue receiver. For those who didn’t have no idea what I’m talkin’ about, please watch Inglorious Basterds. You’ll see a villain only usurped by the mesmerizing Joker (played by the late Heath Ledger; RIP), Col.Hans Landa. His performance is so amazing, you’ll get to loath him in a straight 160 minutes, and love him after that for your entire life. He is the exact definition of a cunning, loathsome man, while being completely charming at the same time. I swear to you, Mr.Waltz here is a class act.

Now what do we know about him? Very little. Inglorious Basterds is his first break in international act, being only in stage and Austrian TV shows before. But boy, did he leave quite an impression on us. Despite all of this big buzz about playing a Nazi Officer to its finest, I still see the big credit must go to Quentin Tarantino himself.

Tarantino, for all we know, always deliver the best in his films. Please, please do not expect to see a world class CGI or action, but rather clever argument, plenty of dialogue that is always entertaining, and most of all, memorable characters. In Reservoir Dogs, there’s the psycho Mr.Blonde (played by Michael Madsen); the Bible reciting contract killer named Jules (played by Samuel L Jackson) in Pulp Fiction; and the extremely sadist Stuntman Mike (played by Kurt Russell) in Death Proof.

If you’re looking for a commercial, action-filled and sellout movie all in one, stay away from Tarantino’s movie. BUT if you ever tired of all that and just wanted a slow pace, lots of beautiful conversation, then I welcome you to watch them.

P/S – I’m 17 years-old when I first watch Pulp Fiction and it bored the hell out of me at that time. 3 years later, Quentin Tarantino joins my personal list of directors whose movie I must not miss, other than Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, and Christopher Nolan.
